Music Space

Music Space is an innovative therapy project for children, aged 0-4 years at risk of developing a neurological condition or with a confirmed diagnosis, and their parents/carers.

We offer a free block of weekly sessions (usually around 6 weeks, each session lasting 30-45 minutes) jointly delivered by our Occupational Therapist and a Nordoff and Robbins Music Therapist.

We use music to support your child’s development from the very first stages in their life and throughout the early years. This includes communication, bonding, physical abilities, positive relationships and emotional wellbeing.

We hope that you will discover new ways of making music with your child and practical ideas that you can take home.

We will work with you to identify the most appropriate positions and instruments to support and challenge your child. By bringing the expertise of occupational therapy and music therapy together, we use music and instruments, to support the development of bonding, attunement, communication (at all stages), motor skills, confidence and emotional well-being.

During initial sessions we aim to get to know you and your child, and to identify what you hope to gain from the sessions/outcomes for your child. We encourage parents and carers to be involved in the session, however also recognise that having the opportunity to sit back, relax and enjoy seeing your child engaging can be a valuable experience. During/after sessions we will discuss with you ideas for you to take home/into other settings and can provide information on the resources used.

Through interactive music-making tailored to your child’s needs, we offer you a relaxed space to connect, play and have fun together. The activities will highlight your child’s strengths and open the door to learning new skills.

What our parents have to say....
"The sessions encouraged more movement and willingness to use my daughter’s weaker side. I saw how she uses eye-pointing as a way of communication".

What do I need to bring?

Nothing specific – however if there are items that may help your child feel more comfortable when getting used to a new environment please feel free to bring those.

No musical skills are required – but please let us know if you/your child has favourite songs.
