Specialist Centre for Children with Neurological Conditions

At Craighalbert, we are dedicated to helping children and young people from birth to 19 years old with complex communication, learning, health, and care needs, to reach their full potential.

Recognised by the Scottish Government as a specialist provider, we support children across Scotland with complex communication, learning, health, and care needs. We offer on-site nursery and school placements at purpose-built facilities in Cumbernauld, while our early intervention programmes support younger children at significant risk of developing or diagnosed with a neurological condition on a sessional basis.

Our experienced and highly skilled multi-disciplinary team work together to create a nurturing, supportive environment where the barriers to learning and development are minimised, enabling every child to thrive, developing their communication, learning and, life skills.

At Craighalbert, we understand the crucial role families play in a child’s journey. That is why we work closely with parents and carers, providing guidance, resources, and practical strategies to help them support their child’s learning and development both at home and in the community.

By sharing and demonstrating evidence-informed and best practice, we not only help individual children but also contribute to improving support for families across Scotland. Together, we can open up new possibilities for children with complex communication, learning, health, and care needs and give them the best chance to live happy, fulfilling lives.

"We got to see our daughter fully engaged and enjoying an activity tailored to her. We saw her develop and learn and build upon relationships and skills and we saw pride and joy in her face as she achieved these things. It's been the most positive experience we've had at any class/activity we've taken our daughter to."

Our approach

A Craighalbert we believe in working as one big team to support your child. Teachers, therapists, support staff, and parents all bring their expertise together, like puzzle pieces forming a complete picture.

Instead of working separately, we collaborate, share skills, and integrate therapy naturally into daily activities, and learn from each other, ensuring constant, seamless support for your child’s growth.

An occupational therapist might support an art session, or a speech therapist might work alongside a teacher during story time. Classroom staff learn therapy techniques, and therapists adapt their approaches to fit the curriculum.

Our facilities

We also offer venue hire, with priority given to groups or organisations that support people with disabilities. Please note that our hydrotherapy pool is currently available only to partner organisations and cannot be hired by individuals.

Our Centre is designed to be fully accessible, ensuring that every child can learn, play, and thrive in a safe and stimulating environment. We offer a wide range of on-site facilities tailored to meet the needs of children with complex communication, learning, health, and care needs. These include a hydrotherapy pool, sensory room, trampoline, spacious classrooms, dining area, conference room, accommodation, and a variety of accessible toilets, including a Changing Places facility.

Learning happens everywhere at our Centre. Our rich and engaging environment encourages play, exploration, and curiosity-driven experiences. Outdoors, children can enjoy our accessible play park and open spaces, where they can move, discover, and connect with nature. Whether indoors or outside, our facilities provide the perfect setting for children to feel safe, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.
